“Not all Zgeeks are GenX, but all GenX were Zgeeks,”
I actually don’t know if that’s true. I haven’t checked for newbies outside of our flying monkey family (if you are new, hi!).
I was born in 76, and one of the sites I visited suggested that I was a millennial too, which I found amusing. No one can agree on any of the generational classifications, but it’s fun telling a 1980s born GenX that they’re a Millennial, they get very mad about it.
My point is, taglines change, just like generational classifications.
What is this?
July 5, 2024 at 5:52 pm #487With the whole GenX thing, there is always going to be disagreement over what the term means. When you’re dealing with people, you’ll struggle to get agreement on what to have for breakfast, so there are no surprises there.
This forum was created out of a discussion on Facebook, and even amongst those I’ve been discussing it with, we probably aren’t going to agree on what constitutes GenX and we probably all have different goals for the site.
I don’t want to start a super long forum post going into minute details. All I’ll say is for me the main goal is to try and get as many of the flying monkey crew back in as possible and see what we can create as a community, separate from the influence of social media algorithms. Many of these people would be roughly classified as GenX. Some of the other people I’ve been discussing this with have identified a desire to extend that out to other geeks of a similar age. I’m not averse to accommodating that as much as possible.

I’m an ’86 baby and there was a time when we were known as Gen Y (including the era of ‘Talkin’ ’bout your generation) but now I am apparently a millennial.

I didn’t realize until about a year ago that Gen Y were renamed Millennials. I thought that was for late 90s kids into the early 2k’s. But then I thought that the early 2k kids were called GenI because everything from that generation is an iSomething.

You see that is at least logical. But apparently not.

It’s a bit like naming Covid variants. It started with the vector of origin (Wuhan, UK, South Africa) and the the powers that be figured out “oh fuck, this is going to lead to some seriously fucked up tribal behavior, best go Greek. How many are we up to? 4. Right Delta it is.”
And now we’ve got Flirt, LB1, KP1 and the whole naming system has gone to hell in a handbasket.
